Human Oversight Requirements

AI can assist. AI cannot decide alone.

The EU AI Act requires human oversight for high-risk AI. But what does that really mean in practice?

The "Human in the Loop" cannot be a rubber stamp. They must have actual agency.

#The Requirement

Article 14 of the AI Act is strict. The human overseer must:

  • 1
Understand the system's capabilities and limitations.
  • 2
Be able to disregard the AI's output.
  • 3
Be able to stop the system ("Kill Switch").

#Why "Click to Confirm" Isn't Enough

If your human operator approves 99.9% of AI suggestions in under 1 second, regulators will view this as "Automation Bias." It's not oversight; it's a sham.

#Designing for Agency

* Friction: Intentionally design friction into the UI for critical decisions. * Confidence Scores: Show the human HOW confident the AI is (and why). * Training: Train your operators to be skeptical of the AI.
